The Arts Administration Department at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music was founded in 2003, after a successful running of the Arts Administration Program under the Department of Musicology in 2002.

During the past five years since its establishment, the Department has made great progresses in both educational and managerial aspects and has developed its own distinctive features.

Unlike the other arts administration departments in China, our department has adopted “The First Category” university admission standards in student recruitment, such that we only take students with high scores in the general college entry examination, regardless of their background.  This recruitment method allows us to form a student body with a variety of trainings and specialties.

The Department has formed a unique academic alliance with the Fudan University, one of the most prestige universities in China, since 2005, enabling our students to enjoy their freshman year at the historical Fudan campus, and take required economics and management related courses from the Fudan Business School and any other classes from the Fudan general curriculums. Through such collaboration, our students may be benefited from both institutions, with unique learning experiences and diverse trainings.

With such unique academic alliance and diverse curriculums, the Department has also recruited faculty from various outstanding arts managers and teachers. In March 2006, Professor Sun-man Tseng from Hong Kong, an expert in arts administration, was appointed the Panel Chair of the Department and Academic Research Leader, which has significantly enhanced the international and professional standing of the Department. Since October 2008, Ms. Huang Yun-Chin has assumed this post. A long-time practitioner in arts management, Ms. Huang is sure to bring new ideas and actions to the Department.

Though relatively new to the profession, our students have performed outstandingly in job market. They not only have completed internship and practical training in arts organizations through out Shanghai and the vicinity, but some have also travelled as far as Beijing, Yunnan and Macao. Our graduates have taken posts in programming, marketing, ticketing, stage management, fund-raising, audience development, PR, museum planning, international artists services, among others. The intellectual and professional demand and challenge on their works is ever increasing.
